Custodia is a response to the meta-crisis.
Climate collapse, economic inequality, technological disruption, and a growing sense of disconnection from ourselves and each other are all symptoms of a larger dynamic. The old systems and ways of thinking that brought us here are no longer viable.
Custodianship is the most important idea of the 21st century.
Humanity is invited to embrace its proper role - to be the custodial species of the Earth. The caretakers, the protectors, and the stewards of the whole ecosystem. Because with great power comes great responsibility.
A place for modern-day Leonardos.
This is not the first major upheaval in our species’ history. The Renaissance was driven by visionary thinkers like da Vinci who reshaped art, science, and society. Just as Florence, Italy became the cradle of that revolution, CUSTODIA aspires to be a hub for 21st-century Leonardos working on bold ideas for navigating our complex challenges.

CUSTODIA is located within the UNESCO World Heritage site of Jatiluwih, nestled on the lush foothills of Mount Batukaru at 850 meters altitude. Surrounded by Bali's largest tropical rainforest, it offers a sanctuary rich in biodiversity and a pleasant climate year-round. Crisp, clean air and a refreshing morning plunge into our river await you.

We believe it is the responsibility of every custodian to take no more from Mother Earth than their fair share. A diverse array of regenerative practices at CUSTODIA enables an ecological footprint of 1.0 and less — a lifestyle that would be sustainable for all 8 billion human beings, without any sense of lack.
Circularity is an essential design criterion for CUSTODIA. Guided by permaculture principles, we strive for near-zero waste, with most resources sourced locally.

Regenerative Architecture
Bamboo, wood, and stone are our preferred building materials. We use earth screw foundations, which leave no traces when removed, minimizing concrete use and soil sealing. Our cotton tents, provided by Danish sustainability leaders Nordisk, ensure both a heavenly and earth-friendly sleep.
Community Focus
Unused facilities and products are among the biggest forms of waste, and they foster separation. At CUSTODIA, we optimize for connection. With an open kitchen, large community and coworking areas, garden, library, and outdoor bathrooms, resources are shared and the spirit of community is invited.
Minimalist Furniture
Overly comfortable sofas and lounging chairs lead to physical deterioration. That’s why life at CUSTODIA happens on the floor. With floor beds, tables, and chairs, we not only activate our bodies but also engage with our little ones at eye level. Our wooden furniture is hand-crafted by local Balinese artisans.
Innovative Tech
At CUSTODIA, technology serves nature. We practice rainwater harvesting and greywater recycling, share electric vehicles, and will soon transition to solar energy. Despite our remote location, our Starlink connection ensures the fastest internet on the mountain.

CUSTODIA offers changemakers residing in Bali a second home. Its companionship consists of various events, gatherings and initiatives, 24/7 access to the site as well as the opportunity to book accommodations.
For custodians living overseas CUSTODIA holds regular 1-2 week long application-only immersions.
CUSTODIA lives in the gift economy.
CUSTODIA is brought to life by the gifts of generous individuals who wish to see it flourish. It is an expression of our sacred work, and so placing a price tag on any programs or services doesn’t feel aligned. Instead, we follow a trust-based contribution model that allows everyone to choose their own contribution, with full transparency to understand the impact of their decisions.
CUSTODIA isn’t owned by anybody.
We believe that this place should not belong to any individual or entity, but rather be part of the commons, like the rivers and forests that surround us. CUSTODIA is in the process of becoming a FairShares Commons, with multi-stakeholder, sociocratic governance, where everyone involved steers the space together. This ensures that decisions are made inclusively and effectively, for the wellbeing of the entire ecosystem.
Transparency over secrecy.
CUSTODIA is not just a single location but aims to evolve into a global web of interconnected places, forming a coherent organism where resources, ideas, and people can flow freely. This is the only way to develop the synergistic wisdom needed to effectively respond to the meta-crisis. The process of building CUSTODIA is fully documented and shared transparently, with all plans, processes, learnings, failures, and materials made public.
